Joachim A Adenusi: IRM Trainer and Certified Fellow

Joachim A Adenusi

IRM Trainer and Certified Fellow

How did you get your job?

I enjoyed risk management as a module while I was studying for my Actuarial Science degree, but when the personal pensions mis-selling scandal review investigation was launched that prompted me to start exploring how to prevent such occurrences in the future, and I found the IRM.

I registered and started doing the exams, quickly finding it more people, habits and change focused than other subjects.

What’s a typical day like as a risk manager?

As a risk manager, my typical day would involve about thinking how can I ensure that key goals and set objectives are delivered for that day, week, month, quarter and year by proactively identifying or minimizing threats while ensuring that opportunities are not ignored. I support colleagues and the business at large. I am only satisfied when they are happy and are close to achieving their objectives or improving performance.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

The joy of watching my colleagues and organisations using my risk management skills to deliver key objectives and meeting key performance indicators with the overall sense of supporting the board of directors in embedding good governance

What are the challenges?

Embedding and sustaining risk culture in organisations. Sometimes, it is seen as a compliance initiative, lacking the real conviction of the benefits and value of implementing risk management

In what way are your IRM qualifications relevant?

The IRM qualifications have been very helpful especially as a Fellow. The IRM modules are designed to prepare participants for the various aspects of practice by going into the detail.

What would you say to others thinking about joining IRM as a member?

The qualifications will validate you as a subject matter expert, and as a member, you have access to a wealth of information and colleagues through the IRM website and networks.

How has your role developed and what are your career ambitions? Has being linked to the IRM helped?

I see myself as helping to improve corporate or organisational performance rather than just being seen as a risk manager. I create and add value to everyone. Being linked to the IRM does provide added credibility because it is an internationally respected body recognised for quality risk management education

Top tips

  • Take IRM qualifications and know the principles well
  • Look for qualified members to mentor you
