Technical Specialist (SIRM)

Specialist knowledge often makes the difference between competence and valuable contribution. We recognise the importance of specialists in risk management and the key role they play in the profession. We welcome specialists as members of IRM.

Anyone who can demonstrate specialist knowledge in a particular risk-related discipline, such as business continuity, crisis management, health & safety, insurance, project risk management or security may apply to become a Technical Specialist. 

To join, you must demonstrate a minimum of 5 years' relevant work experience and either:

  • a recognised and relevant professional or academic qualification (see table)


  • successful completion of one of IRM’s specialist qualifications

This category of membership is also open to practising academics teaching on risk-related university degrees and masters programmes.

Successful applicants have the right to use IRM’s designation SIRM.

Recognised qualifications

If your qualification is not currently listed in the table, but you feel that it meets the criteria for Specialist membership, please complete and submit an application form. You must include with your application:

  • Full syllabus details of the course from the time you completed the qualification

  • Confirmation of your pass mark and duration of the course

  • Certificate of completion

All documents must be submitted in English or applicants must verify any translations.
